
Two revision methods have far more evidence behind them than anything else students actually do: active recall, which means closing the book and forcing the answer out of your own head, and spaced repetition, which means meeting the same material on separate days instead of all at once. The active recall revision technique works because retrieving a fact strengthens it, while re-reading only makes the page feel familiar. This guide gives you the research, a schedule you can copy, and what to do on a Tuesday evening with a chemistry textbook in front of you.
What is the active recall revision technique?
Active recall means testing yourself. You close the book, cover the notes, and try to produce the answer before you check it. Anything that forces retrieval counts: writing everything you remember on blank paper, answering flashcards out loud, doing past-paper questions with the textbook shut, explaining a topic to a parent who has no idea what you are talking about.
The clearest demonstration comes from an experiment published in Science by Jeffrey Karpicke and Henry Roediger. Students learned 40 Swahili-English word pairs. Some kept being tested on pairs they had already answered correctly; others dropped those pairs from testing and simply restudied them instead. Everyone reached the same standard by the end of the learning session. A week later, the two groups looked nothing alike.

Students who kept retrieving recalled around 80% of the list. Students who kept studying but stopped testing recalled 33% and 36%. Repeated study after one successful recall produced no measurable learning at all seven days on.
The uncomfortable detail is what happened before they went home. Students in every condition predicted they would remember about half the list. Nobody could tell which group they were in. That is the central problem with revision: the feeling of knowing something and actually knowing it are different things, and only one of them turns up in the exam hall.
If revision feels smooth and comfortable, treat that as a warning sign rather than a good one. Retrieval feels harder than reading because it is doing more work.
What is spaced repetition, and why does cramming let you down?
Spaced repetition means splitting your study of a topic across separate days rather than stacking it into one long sitting. The total time can be identical. Only the spacing changes.
Nicholas Cepeda and colleagues gathered 254 studies covering 14,811 participants. Averaged across every delay they examined, people who studied in spaced sessions recalled 47.3% of the material, against 36.7% for people who studied the same amount in one block. When the final test came 8 to 30 days later, which is roughly the distance between revising a topic and sitting the paper on it, the gap was much wider: 62.2% for spaced study against 32.8% for massed.
Cramming is not useless. It is borrowing. It gets you through Friday's class test and leaves you with very little by June, which is the wrong trade when the qualification is decided by a paper in the summer.
What does a spaced repetition schedule actually look like?
A later study by the same research group taught more than 1,350 people a set of facts, varied the gap between their two study sessions, and tested them at delays of up to a year. The best-performing gap grew as the final test moved further away: about a day when the test was a week off, around 11 days when it was five weeks off, and roughly three weeks when it was ten weeks off. Using the optimal gap instead of studying twice in a row raised final recall by 64%.
So the rule of thumb is simple. The further away your exam, the longer your review gaps should be. Here is that principle turned into a timetable for a single topic learned tonight, with a summer exam in view.

Four short reviews and one timed run comes to under two hours per topic across three months. Most students spend more than that re-reading a single chapter, and remember less of it.
Keep one page per subject listing every topic and the date you last recalled it. That single list does the job of any revision app, and it takes ten seconds to update.
Why don't re-reading and highlighting work?
John Dunlosky and four co-authors reviewed ten study techniques for Psychological Science in the Public Interest, rating each on how well its benefits held up across different ages, abilities, materials and types of test. Practice testing and distributed practice were the two that earned a high-utility rating. Highlighting and underlining, re-reading, summarising, the keyword mnemonic and forming mental images from text were all rated low utility.
Which is awkward, because the low-utility ones are the popular ones. When Karpicke, Butler and Roediger surveyed 177 students about how they study, 84% listed re-reading their notes or textbook and 55% named it as their single most-used method. Practising recall was listed by 11%, and ranked first by 1%.
Re-reading fails for a specific reason. The second time through, the text is easier to process, and your brain reads that ease as understanding. It is fluency, not memory. Highlighting is worse: it feels like effort, requires almost no thought, and hands you a yellow page that you will later sit down and re-read.
Here is the swap list. Each line replaces a habit that feels productive with one that is.
- 1Stop re-reading the chapter. Read it once, close it, and write down everything you can remember on blank paper.
- 2Stop highlighting. Turn every line you would have highlighted into a question you have to answer from memory.
- 3Stop copying notes out neatly. Copying is transcription, not thinking. Condense from memory first, then check what you missed.
- 4Stop revising one subject for four unbroken hours. Split it into three shorter sessions on three separate days.
- 5Stop checking the answer the moment you feel stuck. Sit with the blank for ten seconds. The straining is the part that works.
- 6Stop dropping a topic the first time you get it right. That is exactly what the students who forgot two thirds of the list did.
- 7Stop treating revision videos as revision. Watch once for the explanation, then close the tab and answer questions on it.
Are these really the only revision techniques that work?
No, and it would be dishonest to claim otherwise. The same review rated three further techniques as moderate utility: interleaved practice, which means mixing topics within a session rather than blocking them; self-explanation; and elaborative interrogation, which means asking yourself why a fact is true. Those work. The evidence behind them is simply thinner or narrower.
What is fair to say is that out of ten techniques examined, only practice testing and spaced practice earned the top rating, and they earned it across every age group, ability level and subject the researchers looked at. If you have the energy to change two habits this term, change these.
UK evidence points the same way. The Education Endowment Foundation rates metacognition and self-regulation, which means teaching pupils to plan, monitor and check their own learning, at +8 months of additional progress, one of the highest-impact approaches in its toolkit. Self-testing is the most direct way a student finds out what they genuinely know, which is the monitoring part done honestly rather than optimistically.
How do you start on a Tuesday evening with a chemistry textbook?
Say the topic is rates of reaction.
- 1Read the section once. Once. No highlighter.
- 2Close the book. Blank sheet of paper. Write down everything you can remember: the definition, the factors that change the rate, the collision-theory explanation, the shape of the graphs. Give it a full eight or ten minutes, including the parts you are straining for.
- 3Open the book and mark your own sheet. Write what you missed in a different colour. That colour is now your revision list for Friday.
- 4Turn the three things you missed into questions rather than statements. 'Why does raising the temperature increase the rate?' beats 'temperature increases rate.'
- 5Answer four exam questions on the topic with the book closed, then mark them against the mark scheme. Every exam board publishes both for free.
- 6Put Friday and next Tuesday in your phone before you stand up.
