The Gloucestershire 11+, Explained Simply
All seven Gloucestershire grammar schools — sometimes called the G7 — admit Year 7 pupils through one shared exam: the Gloucestershire Grammar Schools’ Entrance Test. Your child sits it once and the result can be shared with every consortium school you apply to. The timing has just changed: from 2027 the test is sat in July of Year 5, not September of Year 6, with registration in February and March.
The format changes too. Up to the September 2026 sitting the test was GL Assessment: multiple-choice papers covering verbal and non-verbal reasoning, maths and English. From July 2027 it is set by Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE) in three papers: English and maths in multiple-choice and in short written answers, plus a paper on a subject taught at school. Written answers reward working that is shown and explained, which is exactly what one-to-one 11+ tutoring can build and a book of multiple-choice practice cannot.
One thing Gloucestershire parents should know early: there is no fixed pass mark. Scores are age-standardised and each school ranks qualifying children, so places go to the strongest performers — and the bar varies by school. Pate’s Grammar School in Cheltenham is consistently the most competitive in the county. Meeting the standard is not the goal; ranking well is.

If your child is in Year 5, the test is now months away rather than a year, with no summer holiday before it. The months after registration closes are about exam technique, timing and confidence, not new content. Families in Cirencester, Tewkesbury, the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean sit the same county test but usually travel further to the schools themselves, which makes the sharing of a single test result across schools especially worth understanding before you submit the Common Application Form. Online lessons remove the one variable you would otherwise be stuck with — finding a specialist 11+ tutor within driving distance of a rural postcode.
Filton, Yate and the rest of South Gloucestershire are a separate authority with no grammar schools of its own. Families there can sit this test as out-of-county applicants, but distance often counts once a child has qualified, so many weigh it against the independent schools around Bristol. GCSE and A-Level Exam Boards in Gloucestershire Schools
Schools across the county set different boards, and sometimes different boards for different subjects within the same school. We teach to AQA, Edexcel (Pearson) and OCR at both GCSE and A-Level, and to Eduqas — WJEC's England-facing brand — where a school uses it. This matters more than parents expect: specifications differ in paper structure, in required practicals, and in how questions are worded and marked. A student revising from the wrong board's past papers gets a false read on how ready they are.
