The Gloucestershire 11+, Explained Simply
All seven Gloucestershire grammar schools — sometimes called the G7 — admit Year 7 pupils through one shared exam: the Gloucestershire Grammar Schools’ Entrance Test. Your child sits it once, in September of Year 6, and the result can be shared with every consortium school you apply to. There is no need to sit a separate exam for each school.
The test is set in the GL Assessment style: two multiple-choice papers of around an hour each, with a short break between them, covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, maths and English comprehension. Verbal and non-verbal reasoning are rarely taught in primary school — which is exactly why structured preparation makes such a difference, and why our 11+ tutoring programme treats them as skills to be built, not talents your child either has or hasn’t.
One thing Gloucestershire parents should know early: there is no fixed pass mark. Scores are age-standardised and each school ranks qualifying children, so places go to the strongest performers — and the bar varies by school. Pate’s Grammar School in Cheltenham is consistently the most competitive in the county. Meeting the standard is not the goal; ranking well is.

Filton, Yate and the rest of South Gloucestershire are a separate authority with no grammar schools of its own, so the Gloucestershire consortium test is not the local route there. GCSE and A-Level Exam Boards in Gloucestershire Schools
Schools across the county set different boards, and sometimes different boards for different subjects within the same school. We teach to AQA, Edexcel (Pearson) and OCR at both GCSE and A-Level, and to Eduqas — WJEC's England-facing brand — where a school uses it.
