Physics Exam Boards We Teach To

The physics does not change between boards. What changes is the equation sheet — how much is given and how much has to be recalled — along with which practicals are required and how heavily each paper leans on extended calculation. Those differences decide what a student should be drilling, which is why lessons run on your child's actual specification and that board's past papers from week one rather than on Physics in general.

AQA

The most widely taught Physics specification in England. At A-Level it runs across three papers, and the last carries a section on an optional topic the school picks — so two students on the same board can sit a different final paper. Practical work is assessed through questions in those written papers, never as a separate exam.

Edexcel (Pearson)

Widely used in independent schools and for International GCSE. Its papers lean harder on multi-step problems set in an unfamiliar context, so a student drilled on recall can look ready on AQA material and then stall on the paper they will actually sit.

OCR

OCR runs two distinct routes at each level and parents are rarely told which one their child is on. At GCSE, Gateway and Twenty First Century teach the same physics in a different order. At A-Level, Physics A is the conventional route while Physics B (Advancing Physics) teaches through applied contexts.

Years 12 & 13

A-Level Physics: What the Course Actually Demands

The maths is the part that surprises people. Of the three sciences, Physics carries much the heaviest mathematical requirement at A-Level — a far larger share of marks assess maths skills than in Chemistry or Biology. Trigonometry, logarithms, exponentials, rearranging multi-step expressions and reading meaning from a gradient all arrive as physics questions rather than maths ones. A student who found GCSE Maths hard work feels that gap in the first half-term, and it shows up as lost calculation marks rather than lost understanding.

The step up is in modelling, not content. GCSE Physics rewards recall and single-step calculation. A-Level asks a student to model a situation they have not seen before, usually across several steps, with none of the scaffolding a GCSE paper provides. That is why a grade 8 or 9 at GCSE is no guarantee of a comfortable Year 12 — and why the fix is almost always to re-secure the basics rather than to push forward faster.

Practical work carries its own weight. Required practicals are examined through the written papers rather than assessed separately, and alongside the A*–E grade students receive a Practical Endorsement reported as Pass or Not Classified. It does not affect the grade. Universities still see it.

One board-level detail worth knowing early: some A-Level Physics specifications include an optional topic chosen by the school, which means two students on the same board can sit a different final paper. We confirm which option a student is on before planning any lessons. If they are taking A-Level Maths alongside, we make the two reinforce each other rather than run in parallel.

Diagnostics

Where Physics Marks Are Actually Lost

After enough papers the same handful of gaps account for most of the missing marks, and almost none of them is a gap in physics knowledge. These are the ones we look for first, and they shape how we plan exam preparation for every Physics student.

Choosing the wrong equation

Almost never a memory failure. The student knows the equations and cannot tell which situation calls for which, because the scenario is worded unfamiliarly. Selection is a trainable skill and we train it explicitly.

Rearranging after substituting

Substitute first and the algebra gets harder and the arithmetic messier. Rearrange first, then substitute, and most calculation errors disappear. It is a habit, and habits are quick to change.

Units and prefixes

Kilo, milli, micro, nano, and centimetres left unconverted into metres. The physics is right and the mark is gone, which makes this the most frustrating category on the list and the fastest to fix.

Graph work

Gradients, intercepts, areas under curves and lines of best fit carry real marks in every series. Students who revise content but never practise graph questions lose them consistently.

Required practical questions

Method, variables, sources of error and how results should be analysed. This is a different kind of thinking from recalling a law, and theory-only revision leaves it feeling unfamiliar in the exam.

Six-mark extended answers

These want a chain of cause and effect, each step following from the last. Students who list every relevant fact they know score far below students who say less in the right order.
