Which Selective Schools Can Bristol Families Apply To?
Bristol has no state grammar schools, so selective-minded families follow one of two routes, and they are not variations on a theme. They test different things, and preparing for one is not preparation for the other.
Gloucestershire grammar schools
Pate's in Cheltenham, Denmark Road, Sir Thomas Rich's, The Crypt, Ribston Hall, Marling and Stroud High all select through the same GL Assessment test, sat at the start of Year 6. One sitting, results shared with every school on the list.
Bristol independent schools
Bristol Grammar School, Queen Elizabeth's Hospital (QEH), Clifton College, Redmaids' High and Badminton run their own entrance papers, most adding an interview. Formats differ enough that preparation has to be built around your actual shortlist.
The Gloucestershire 11+ leans hard on reasoning under strict timing, which is why verbal and non-verbal reasoning carry so much weight in preparation. Most Bristol primaries never teach either. Filton and North Bristol
Filton sits outside the city line, in South Gloucestershire, so school admissions run through a different council on a different timetable. We have written that area up separately.
The Deadline That Catches Bristol Families Out
For an out-of-county application, the date that matters is not the exam. Registration for the test closes the summer beforehand, and registering to sit a test is a separate process from applying for a school place through your local authority. Families who assume the two are the same thing find out late.

It leaves room to build reasoning technique at a sane pace, to sit timed papers before the real one, and, just as usefully, to decide against the whole route if the commute or the odds do not justify it. GCSE and A-Level Tutoring for Bristol Students
Bristol’s post-16 scene is genuinely competitive. Sought-after sixth forms and colleges set subject-specific GCSE entry requirements, and strong A-Levels open the door to the University of Bristol and UWE for students who want a top degree close to home. Where a sixth form place is conditional on particular grades, the plan is built around those grades rather than an overall average.

KS3 in Bristol: The Years That Decide GCSE

KS3 is where reading stamina, essay structure, analytical writing and the algebra fluency GCSE assumes are actually built, and a student who reaches Year 10 without them spends two years catching up rather than getting ahead.
