Filton sits just north of the city boundary, in South Gloucestershire. Everything about daily life points at Bristol — the shops, the commute, the postcode people give out — but school admissions run through a different council, with its own application form and its own admissions rules.
Neither South Gloucestershire nor Bristol has state grammar schools, so selective entry from Filton means one of two routes. The nearest state route is the grammar schools’ entrance test up in Gloucestershire, which from 2027 is sat in July of Year 5. The other is the independent schools around Bristol, which set their own entrance papers. Either way, the decision is really made in Year 5.
None of that changes what a lesson looks like. It changes which deadline you are working to, and it is worth settling before anyone commits a year to 11+ preparation.

For children now in Year 5. Two councils, one deadline each. The selective test belongs to Gloucestershire’s grammar schools; the application belongs to South Gloucestershire, because you always apply through your home council.

Admission rules differ from one grammar school to the next, and some give priority to nearby addresses, so check each school’s own policy before registering. The Gloucestershire 11+ guide covers the test itself.
The boundary runs through the middle of this area. A few streets can put you in a different council’s admissions process, which is worth knowing early.
The town itself, just north of the Bristol city line and firmly in South Gloucestershire. That is the detail most families discover late: the council that handles your school admissions is not the one whose name is on the nearest road sign.
Immediately north again, on the same side of the boundary as Filton and inside the same admissions process. Lessons run from home either way, so the only thing your address changes is the paperwork.
One of the fastest-grown areas in the region, which tends to mean busy year groups and a lot of competition for the places families want most.
East of Filton and still in South Gloucestershire. A good share of the working day here runs on the rail line, which is exactly the kind of week online lessons are easier to fit around.
A few streets south and you are over the line into Bristol, with a different admissions authority and a different application form. Worth checking which side your postcode sits on before anything else.
Also inside the city rather than South Gloucestershire. Same lessons, same rates, but the school application runs through Bristol rather than through the council next door.
