Neither South Gloucestershire nor Bristol has state grammar schools. The nearest selective route is the shared county entrance test up in Gloucestershire, sat at the very start of Year 6, which means the decision to go for it is really made in Year 5.

The town itself, just north of the Bristol city line and firmly in South Gloucestershire. That is the detail most families discover late: the council that handles your school admissions is not the one whose name is on the nearest road sign.
Immediately north again, on the same side of the boundary as Filton and inside the same admissions process. Lessons run from home either way, so the only thing your address changes is the paperwork.
One of the fastest-grown areas in the region, which tends to mean busy year groups and a lot of competition for the places families want most.
East of Filton and still in South Gloucestershire. A good share of the working day here runs on the rail line, which is exactly the kind of week online lessons are easier to fit around.
A few streets south and you are over the line into Bristol, with a different admissions authority and a different set of deadlines. Worth checking which side your postcode sits on before anything else.
Also inside the city rather than South Gloucestershire. Same lessons, same rates, but the school application runs through Bristol rather than through the council next door.
