It Is Not a Memory Test, Which Is Why Memorising Stops Working
A-Level Biology has more content than either of the other sciences, so students reasonably conclude that learning it is the job. Then the paper describes an organism they have never studied, gives them data from a study they have never read, and asks them to explain what is happening using principles they do know. Content revision is necessary and is not what is being marked.
That is the gap lessons work in: reading a question for what it is actually asking, transferring a familiar mechanism to an unfamiliar case, and writing the explanation out in the linked steps the mark scheme awards. It is a faster route to marks than another pass through the biology a student can already recite.

Where A-Level Biology Marks Are Actually Lost
Six patterns account for most of the distance between what a student knows and what the paper credits them with.
Answering the topic instead of the question
The single biggest difference from GCSE. A-Level Biology sets familiar principles in unfamiliar contexts — an enzyme in an organism nobody has studied, a graph from a paper nobody has read. A student who writes everything they know about enzymes has answered a question that was not asked.
Explanation chains that stop one link early
Marks are awarded per link: the change, the mechanism, the consequence. 'Water moves in' scores nothing where 'water moves in by osmosis, down a water potential gradient, so the cell becomes turgid' scores three. Most lost marks here are known biology, written short.
The statistics questions
At least a tenth of the marks assess maths, and the part students find hardest is not the arithmetic but the choice: which test suits this data and why, what the result actually licenses you to say, and what a p-value does and does not mean.
Imprecise naming
Biology is marked on terminology more tightly than any other science. Diffusion is not osmosis, an allele is not a gene, and 'the body fights it' is not an immune response. Precision here is cheap to teach and expensive to lack.
Required practicals answered from memory
Serial dilutions, microscopy and calibration, chromatography, respirometers, dissection. The papers ask why this control, why this concentration range, what error this introduces — questions a student cannot answer by recalling that the practical happened.
The long synoptic answer
The highest-tariff writing on the course rewards linking topics that were taught a year apart, and it is marked by level rather than by point. Students who revise topic by topic have never once practised the thing being assessed.
How the Two Years Divide the Work
Volume arrives first
Biological molecules, cells, exchange and transport, genetic information. The content load jumps immediately and the writing demand does not, so students often finish Year 12 with good notes and untested exam technique.
Depth, and the maths
Energy transfer, response to stimuli, homeostasis, gene expression and populations — plus the statistics that Year 12 introduced and Year 13 assumes. This is where students who were coping start to feel the gap between knowing and answering.
Linear and synoptic
Everything is examined at the end of Year 13, and the longest questions deliberately cross years. Content revised well in isolation still has to be connected under time pressure.

Every board finishes with extended writing of some kind, and one sets a synoptic essay worth twenty-five marks on its own. What these questions have in common is that they are deliberately unteachable by topic: a good answer moves between areas of the course taught a year apart, and it is marked as a whole rather than by counting correct points.
A student can therefore write four pages of accurate biology and score in the middle, because accuracy is not the criterion — selection and connection are. The practice that works is narrow and repeatable, and most students have never once done it before the exam.
It is the clearest example of why more content revision stops paying at A-Level. Everything needed for a full-mark essay is usually already in a student's notes.
The Practicals Are Examined on Paper, Not at the Bench
The practical endorsement is reported separately as Pass or Not Classified and does not touch the A*–E grade. The required practicals behind it are examined, though — through written questions about why that control, why that dilution series, what error a particular method introduces and what the data can support.
Students who can describe what they did in the lab often still cannot say why the method was designed that way, and the marks are entirely in the second thing. It is also the part of the course that connects most directly to exam preparation as a whole, because it is pure reasoning about evidence.
