The Shape of the Course

Three Subjects Taught in Parallel and Marked as One

A-Level Chemistry runs three strands at once — physical, inorganic and organic — usually taught by different teachers, in different rooms, from different textbooks. Students reasonably conclude they are three subjects and revise them that way. The papers then ask a question that starts in organic, needs an equilibrium argument to answer and ends in a calculation, and the strategy that worked all year stops working.

Most of what a tutor can add at this level is the connective work nobody is timetabled to do: the same reaction seen from all three directions, the mechanism explained by the bonding rather than memorised, the calculation practised inside a question about something else. It is also why we teach to the order your child's school is actually using rather than to a standard topic list — on chemistry that order varies more between boards than in any other science.

Years 12 and 13

Where the Course Actually Gets Harder

The step up is not evenly spread. Knowing where it lands changes when a family should act.

Year 12

The vocabulary year

Moles, energetics, bonding, equilibria in their simplest form, and the first organic families. Almost everything here is a tool used again later, which is why a shaky Year 12 does not stay a Year 12 problem — it becomes the reason Year 13 feels impossible.

Year 13

The year that uses all of it

Rate equations, Kp, electrode potentials, entropy and free energy, transition metals, aromatic and carbonyl chemistry, and spectroscopy. Each one assumes Year 12 fluency rather than revisiting it.

The exam

Linear, so nothing is banked

The course is examined at the end of Year 13, across all of it. A student who learned Year 12 well enough to pass the mocks and then moved on will meet that content again cold, in questions that also require Year 13 material.

Where A-Level Chemistry Marks Are Actually Lost

After enough papers the same six account for most of the gap between what a student knows and what they score.

The calculation chain breaks in the middle

Most chemistry calculations are three or four steps with moles at the centre, and the marks are spread across the chain rather than sitting on the answer. A student who can do every step individually still loses most of the question if step two produces the wrong units, because everything after it inherits the error.

Units, standard form and significant figures

Converting cm³ to dm³, working in kJ rather than J, quoting an answer to the significant figures the data justifies. These are marks that have nothing to do with chemistry and are lost by strong chemists every series.

Mechanisms drawn as decoration

Curly arrows are a notation with rules: each one shows a pair of electrons moving, and it starts at a bond or a lone pair and ends where those electrons go. An arrow drawn from the wrong place, or a missing dipole or charge, loses the mark even when the student knows what the reaction does.

Definitions answered approximately

Enthalpy of formation, standard conditions, the mole itself. These are marked against precise wording — a nearly-right definition scores nothing, and they are among the most reliably repeated marks on any paper.

Practical questions treated as theory

Method, variables, sources of error, why a particular apparatus and not another. The required practicals are examined through the written papers, so a student who read the theory and never thought about the bench meets these questions unprepared.

The synoptic paper

One question pulling physical, inorganic and organic together. Students who learned the three strands as three separate subjects cope with the topic papers and then lose ground here, which is the single most common shape of a disappointing A-Level Chemistry result.

The Endorsement

The Practical Grade That Is Not Part of the Grade

Alongside the A*–E, students receive a practical endorsement reported as Pass or Not Classified. It does not move the grade at all, which leads some students to treat it as paperwork. Universities see it, and more usefully, the work it covers is examined: at least 15% of the written marks assess practical skills, through questions about method, variables, error and analysis rather than through the lab itself.

Those questions are the most teachable marks on the paper and the ones revision most often skips, because they cannot be revised from a topic list. Lessons work them the way the examiner sets them — from the write-up outwards — which is also the fastest way to make a titration or a rate experiment make sense as chemistry rather than as a procedure.

The Four Courses, and How They Differ

Not by content so much as by how the content is sequenced and asked for — which is what decides whether a revision resource matches the course a student is actually taking.

AQA

The most widely taught A-Level Chemistry course in England, and the one most school schemes are built around. Its papers separate physical and inorganic from organic and physical before bringing everything together, so students meet the synoptic demand late and often for the first time under exam conditions.

OCR A

Structured close to AQA in content but organised into its own module sequence, which matters when a student moves school mid-course or works from mixed revision resources. Papers reward precise use of terminology heavily.

OCR B (Salters)

Genuinely different in approach: chemistry is taught through contexts — the atmosphere, medicines, materials — with the theory distributed across them and revisited. Students who try to revise it topic-by-topic from a generic resource find their notes do not match their course.

Edexcel (Pearson)

Common in independent schools and internationally. Its question style leans on extended calculation and data interpretation, so students drilled on shorter recall questions can find the papers longer than they expected rather than harder.
