
Falling behind in maths: the short answer
- A hard term and a real gap look identical on a report. The difference is whether last month's work still works: a gap gets inherited by the next topic, difficulty on its own does not.
- The autumn term is when it becomes visible and when it is cheapest to fix — the first assessments land around October, the parents' evening follows, and nothing is being decided by an exam yet.
- "Bad at maths" is usually four or five missing ideas — place value, negative numbers, times tables, fractions, and rearranging an equation — not a missing ability.
- Check whether it is only maths. If every subject slipped at once, the cause is usually outside the subject, and the fix is a different one.
- Get the diagnosis before you buy the help: the last assessment paper, with the lost marks sorted into didn't-know, slipped and ran out of time, tells you more than the grade does.
Maths is the one subject where today's lesson assumes yesterday's. That single fact explains why a gap here behaves differently from a gap in history, why waiting costs more, and why "being bad at maths" is almost always four or five specific missing ideas rather than a missing ability.
Why maths gaps snowball faster than in other subjects
Miss a fortnight of history and you miss the Tudors. Miss a fortnight of maths and you miss fractions — and fractions turn up again in ratio, in percentages, in probability, in algebra, in rearranging a formula in Year 11.
That is the whole problem in one sentence: maths is sequential in a way most school subjects aren't. A gap doesn't sit still, it gets inherited by the next topic. Which is why a child can look fine in Year 7, shaky in Year 8, and lost in Year 9 without anything dramatic happening in between.
"Being bad at maths" is usually four or five missing ideas, not a missing ability. Negative numbers, place value, times tables, fractions, and the rules for rearranging an equation account for a very large share of what looks like general weakness. Find them and the picture changes quickly.
The child is often the last person able to tell you what's wrong. They know they got 4 out of 20. They don't know that 16 of those marks came off two ideas they never quite got in Year 6.

Five signs your child is falling behind
Not "signs they find maths hard". Signs the gap is widening:
- Homework takes far longer than the teacher intended. A 20-minute task eating an hour usually means the recall isn't automatic. The thinking is being spent on the arithmetic instead of on the question.
- They can do it in the lesson and not the next day. This is the clearest signal of all. Following a worked method is not the same as owning it, and a child who can only do maths with someone sitting beside them has procedures, not understanding.
- The answer arrives with no working. Either it was guessed, copied, or produced by an app. All three hide the step that's missing.
- Test marks and classwork disagree. Fine in the book, poor in the test, is the classic signature of gaps: the book had the example on the page above.
- The subject has become a personality statement. "I'm just not a maths person" at thirteen is almost never a statement about ability. It's a shield.
One more, harder to spot: the child who is quietly avoiding. No refusal, no scene — just always the easier question, always the sheet left at school, always the topic they'd rather not talk about.
Why the autumn term is when you find out — and the cheapest time to act
A maths gap is made in one year and discovered in the next. The autumn term is when the discovering happens, because it is the term that tests what survived the summer, and it is also the only term in the year where fixing it does not compete with an exam. The shape below is the ordinary English secondary year; your school's dates will differ by a fortnight either way, but the order does not.

Nothing to judge yet
New teacher, often a new set, and the first topics of a new scheme of work. Nobody has data on your child yet — the school included — so a worry formed in the first fortnight is a guess. Use the time to ask which set they are in and what that set is working towards.

The first real assessment
The first unit test or baseline is the first honest signal of the year, and it is where a summer of forgetting shows up as a mark that looks worse than the child. Ask to see the paper, not the score. A mark tells you there is a problem; the paper tells you which one.

Half-term — the cheapest week of the year
One week in which no new content is being added on top. It is the only point in the term where catching up is not running while the class also runs. A week of recall practice here is worth a month of it in February.

Five minutes per subject, and most of it spent on reassurance unless you steer it. The six questions below are the ones that produce usable answers; "how is she getting on?" invites a polite non-answer.

The first full report
The first written judgement of the year, and the point where set moves get discussed. In Year 10 and 11 these are also the results that start informing the foundation-or-higher tier conversation. A gap found here still has two full terms in front of it, which is the whole argument for acting now rather than in March.
If you do one thing this term, do it in October rather than after the December report. The same gap, found six weeks earlier, is closed inside the term instead of chasing a class that has moved on twice since.
Is it maths, or is it every subject?
Worth settling early, because the two problems have different fixes and only one of them is a tutoring question. Maths slipping while English, science and the humanities hold up is a subject problem: a missing idea, a pace mismatch, a topic taught in a week your child was elsewhere. Everything slipping together is not — it is almost always something outside the classroom, and no amount of maths teaching will touch it.
When the whole report dips at once, the usual causes are:
- Attendance. The most under-read line on any report. In England, 19.05% of pupils were persistently absent across 2025/26 — missing a tenth or more of their sessions — and the overall absence rate in secondary schools was 8.57%. In a sequential subject, the same fortnight costs more than it does anywhere else on the timetable.
- The move to secondary school. Year 7 changes the teacher, the room, the set, the pace and the expectation of independence all in one September. A dip here is common and usually recovers; a dip that is still there at Christmas is worth acting on.
- Something that is not academic at all. Sleep, friendships, a phone, an illness, something at home. A child carrying any of these produces the same report as a child with knowledge gaps, and tutoring the second problem does nothing for the first.
- An unmet need. Difficulties with reading speed, working memory or attention show up across every written subject at once. That is a conversation with the school's SENCo, and it comes before a tutor rather than after one.

The six questions to ask at parents' evening
Five minutes, one subject, and a teacher who has thirty of these tonight. Ask these and you will leave with something you can act on:
- 1Which topics is she losing marks on — and is it the topic itself, or the arithmetic underneath it?
- 2Can I see the last assessment paper, or a photo of it?
- 3Was this a class-wide dip on a hard topic, or hers alone?
- 4Which set is she in, and what does that set decide about the grade she can be entered for?
- 5If we work on one thing at home this half-term, what should it be?
- 6What would you do first if she were yours?
Write the answers down in the room. The single most useful sentence a maths teacher can give you is the name of the topic underneath the topic — the thing that has to be true before the current work makes sense — and it is the sentence most likely to be forgotten by the time you reach the car.
What's actually causing it — three usual suspects
Missed foundations. Something got skipped, was taught while they were absent, or was covered in a week they'd mentally checked out. Everything built on it wobbles. Extremely common, very fixable, and invisible on a report card that only shows current-topic marks.
Pace. A class of thirty moves at one speed. A child who needs a second explanation, or a third example, doesn't get one in a 50-minute lesson with a scheme of work to cover — and the lesson moves on regardless of whether they came with it.
Confidence, and sometimes real anxiety. This one is badly underestimated. Research from the University of Cambridge's Centre for Neuroscience in Education, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, surveyed over 2,700 students — around 1,700 of them in the UK — and found maths anxiety present in early primary school and worse by secondary. Children described bursting into tears, physical symptoms, being afraid to ask questions in class, and wanting to drop maths as soon as they were allowed.

Anxious and behind are two separate problems that need noticing separately — and the study also found teachers' and parents' own maths anxieties can feed a child's, which is worth sitting with before the next kitchen-table session.
If you also see difficulties that look more fundamental — no sense of number size, no progress on counting or place value despite sustained support — that is a conversation with the school's SENCo, not a tutoring question. Ask for it directly.
What to try at home first
Before you pay anyone, four things worth a fortnight.
Get the actual diagnosis, not the grade. Email the maths teacher one specific question: which topics is she losing marks on, and is it the topic or the arithmetic underneath it? Teachers answer specific questions far better than general worry, and "how is he getting on?" invites a reassuring non-answer.
Ask to see the last test paper. Not the mark — the paper. Read the wrong answers with your child and sort them into three piles: didn't know the method, knew it and slipped, ran out of time. Three different problems, three different fixes.
Fix recall, not topics. Ten minutes of times tables, number bonds and mental arithmetic beats an hour of re-teaching Pythagoras. Automatic recall frees up the thinking capacity that hard questions need. Short, daily, boring, effective.
Change what "help" looks like. Ask them to explain a question to you rather than watch you solve it. Retrieval is the point: the two techniques with the strongest evidence behind them, active recall and spaced repetition, both come down to pulling information out rather than pushing it in. It also helps to know which topics cause the most trouble nationally — the topics students search for most is a decent map.
Avoid re-teaching with the method you learned at school. Methods have changed, and two competing methods make a shaky topic worse. If you don't know how the school does it, ask before you demonstrate.
When to bring in extra help
There's no universal trigger, but these four are reasonable ones:
- The gap goes back more than a year, and neither of you can find the floor.
- Your child has stopped trying, or has started saying they're stupid.
- Homework has become the main argument in the house
- A decision point is coming: sets, GCSE options, mocks, or the 11+.
Timing matters more than intensity. Year 7 to Year 9 is the cheap window — the gaps are smaller, there's no exam pressure, and the work is diagnostic rather than remedial. By spring of Year 11 the same gap costs more to close and leaves less room for anything else, which is the argument for treating Year 9 as the point to act rather than Year 11. If a selective exam is in the picture, 11+ preparation has its own timetable again.
How one-to-one closes gaps
One-to-one tuition has a good evidence base behind it. The Education Endowment Foundation's Teaching and Learning Toolkit, drawing on 123 studies, estimates one-to-one tuition delivers around five months' additional progress on average, and rates the security of that evidence as high — one of the better-evidenced things you can do, though an average across many studies is not a promise about any individual child.
